Marie Kondo-ing my Senior Project

If you haven't watched the new Netflix Series called Tidying Up with Marie Kondo go watch it! I originally started it to make me fall asleep and cure my headache. Sadly, it only made my headache worse, because I ended up binging the show. The premise of the show is to help people reorganize their homes with the help of Marie Kondo's tidying strategy. If you've watched Hoarders it's kind of the same idea, but not as gross and or aggressive. Kondo is much gentler and less judgmental. Her style helps those find items that bring them joy. What most people realize on her show is the deep connection people have with their items. With this strategy some realize some items bring them joy and some that do bring them joy have brought them enough joy to the point they're ready to let them go.  Long story short I felt like her strategy and thought process was very effective, simple, and empathetic. Kondo's strategy will be my guide for my Senior project.

As of right now, I am overwhelmed with ideas. My plan now is to figure out what ideas actually bring me joy. I have begun sketching and researching. One of the biggest and most helpful suggestion my graphic design professor gave me was to checkout Children's products and other food packaging designs on Pinterest. The issue with Dim Sum takeout containers currently is that they can only fit four dumplings, they're small, and if you order out you can get about 10 containers with you to bring home. Resulting to a lot of waste. The biggest concern she brought up to me was how can I make this design environmentally friendly? The easy way out could just be finding biodegradable takeout containers, but those can also be expensive and not durable at all. This won't really work since Dim Sum is steamed and with that comes moisture which can cause the box to become weaker. The new goal is how can I reduce paper or plastic waste?

Funny thing is I remembered the episode when Kondo introduced the idea of packing clothes and miscellaneous items in boxes with compartments or boxes within a box.

So I started looking at Ferrero Roche boxes, Sushi containers, containers with compartments, Ikea, etc. things that can separate the foods from each other and honestly I think those may work. The next struggle is figuring out which design will actually work and be easy to build in time for the show.

  1. Putting a photo of your sketches is a good idea. It will be cool to see more of them in the future.
